By the Numbers
New Cynet Survey Reveals Cybersecurity Services Are Doubled-Edged Sword for MSPs
Cybersecurity services are fueling growth and deepening client relationships for MSPs, but complexity and tool sprawl are slowing their growth down. Indeed, today MSPs are managing an average of 50 clients, 1,728 endpoints, and respond to over 100 security incidents per year, according to the just-released report, Managed Security Snapshot: 2025 Growth, Gaps & Game Plans, from cybersecurity platform provider Cynet. And on average, MSP survey respondents rely on four distinct security products from four separate vendors.
A majority of MSPs surveyed have adopted core offerings like identity and access management (91%), managed detection and response (85%), and firewall and network security services (78%). However, adoption of more advanced or specialized services remains uneven. For instance, only 40% of MSPs offer cloud security, and fewer than 40% provide endpoint protection platforms (EPP) or endpoint detection and response (EDR). The numbers are lower for data protection (35%), vulnerability management (35%), and incident response (30%).
Even fewer MSPs deliver advanced or always-on services like 24×7 monitoring, managed SIEM, patch management, or backup and disaster recovery, each offered by just 14–25% of providers. Compliance management is currently provided by just over a quarter of MSPs.
The average annual spend on security tools across all respondents is just over $300,000, with an average margin of 23%. However, MSPs with a broader array of security tools consistently report thinner margins, according to the findings.
At the same time, 68% of MSPs say their cybersecurity offerings have had a positive impact on client retention. An additional 28% described the impact as extremely positive.
Top Challenges
Respondents say their top cybersecurity challenges are lack of integration between tools (30%) and lack of visibility across client environments (29%).
In terms of growth challenges, half of all MSPs cite a lack of automation as the top factor holding them back. That’s followed closely by poor tool integration (49%) and insufficient training for security teams (42%).
Nearly every MSP surveyed (94%) expressed interest in a unified cybersecurity solution, with 64% extremely interested.
“Managed cybersecurity services are in record demand as cyberattacks increase in volume and sophistication,” said Cynet CEO Jason Magee, in a press statement. “The MSP Survey findings reinforce why scalable breach protection is mission-critical to maximizing growth in the channel. We look forward to translating these insights into action and collaborating with Cynet partners to deliver the benefits of operational efficiency, total visibility and automated protection.” (For a conversation with Magee from earlier in the year, see Former ConnectWise CEO Jason Magee Takes the Helm at Cynet.)
Cynet conducted the research in collaboration with Global Surveyz, an independent survey company, between February and March 2025.
